Elementary Science Olympiad (non-competitive/class)
For 2019-20 we are teaming up with illuminat-ED Coschool in Naperville to provide a foundation program to students ages 8-11 as of Sept. 1, 2019 who are able to follow directions, write quickly and legibly (spelling can be phonetic as long as your child can understand their own writing) and work with others without significant assistance.
The class will use Science Olympiad's elementary curriculum and lesson plans integrated with some additional activities and lessons to build the foundation skills needed for good future science learning.
Students should be able to read independently and write well enough to be understood. Spelling is slightly less of an issue but being able to write out their thoughts quickly without asking for spelling help is key. This is also a good alternative for older students who don't want to participate in the competitive team as the lesson plans from Science Olympiad are targeted to this age range and give a foundation in many of the competitive events.
The activities will span a broad range of science topics and can range from the messy and active to the cleaner and more academic.
Illinois Science Olympiad runs a competitive Elementary (Div. A) program. Our group will not be participating in the Div. A competitive league at this time. If we (as a group) decide there is interest in a competitive team for the following year, we will move forward in that direction.

2021 Events
(for the year ending in may 2021)
Science Olympiad events are broken into five "domains": life, personal & social science; earth & space science; physical science and chemistry; technology & engineering; and inquiry & nature of science.
You can find brief descriptions of the events at the SCIOLY Wiki pages and the official Science Olympiad pages for the events. Each has a significant number of resources available for study purposes. We will discuss how to use these at our first meeting (NOT the informational meeting).
